The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) has updated its list of out-of-state driver’s licenses that are no longer valid in Florida, effective July 1, 2023. Is your state’s driver’s license on this list? Keep reading to find out if your license is valid in Florida.
Which States’ Driver’s Licenses Are Not Accepted in Florida?
Currently, there are five states on the FLHSMV’s list of invalid out-of-state licenses. Florida does not accept licenses from the following states:
- Connecticut
- Delaware
- Hawaii
- Rhode Island
- Vermont
Connecticut Drive-Only License Now Invalid in Florida
Connecticut offers a “drive-only” license to residents without permanent legal status who need a vehicle for transportation. As of now, this license is not accepted in Florida. The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles reports that around 61,000 residents currently hold a drive-only license. This program began in 2014 to allow immigrants without legal status to drive legally without being registered or insured, according to Connecticut State Law (Public Act 2013-89).
Delaware Driving Privilege Cards Not Accepted in Florida
Since 2015, Delaware has issued Driving Privilege Cards (DPCs) to undocumented residents. To qualify, applicants must provide proof of identity and submit fingerprints. These cards are only valid within Delaware. Driving outside of Delaware with a DPC or using it as an identification card elsewhere is already considered a risk. Florida does not recognize these cards as valid.
Can You Drive in Florida with a License from Another State?
As long as your driver’s license is not from one of the five states listed above (Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, or Vermont), it should be valid in Florida. To check the status of your license, visit the FLHSMV website, enter your driver’s license number, and click on “Driver’s License & ID Tracking.” If you present an invalid license from any of the five states mentioned, you may be cited.
