There is never a guarantee that you will be able to avoid an accident when you are driving a vehicle, but there are steps which you can take to ensure that you are reducing your risk of causing one. The large majority of accidents on our roads, some 64%, are caused by driver behavior. There are however a great number which are the result of poor vehicle maintenance. Let’s take a look then at what good car maintenance can do in reducing your risk of having an accident.
Clearing Loose Objects
You may be surprised that something as seemingly harmless as some loose objects in vehicles could cause accidents, but they do in fact account for a large number of accidents and injuries on our roads. Accidents caused by loose objects in vehicles can happen in a number of ways, which is why you should always ensure that you have a clean car. Loos objects can get stuck beneath the brake or gas pedals, they can distract a driver and they can also cause a lot of damage if you are involved in an accident and hit by them.
Correct Tire Maintenance
Bald and balding tires are another frequent cause of accidents on our roads, and that is why you should always ensure that you check the level of tread which your tires have. It is estimated that 21% of all drivers are operating vehicles which have tread that is beneath the legally required limit, and this can easily result in accidents. When the tire loses its tread it makes braking slower and maneuvering the vehicle more difficult. Add to this some harsh weather conditions and you have a recipe for an accident.
Headlight Issues
When driving at night we rely on our headlights to see all potential hazards in front of us. If however your headlights are not clean, they will not be able to illuminate the road ahead as well as they should. This can easily result in you missing items ahead of you and causing a crash. This is something which is so simple too avoid, and making sure that your headlights are clean is simple maintenance which you should be doing regularly.
Wiper Blade Maintenance
Far too many drivers have vehicles with wiper blades which are not fit for purpose, and this too causes a great number of accidents on the road. If you are driving through rain, sleep or snow, you need these wipers to get rid of as much precipitation from your windshield as possible. If this is not the case then you are going to have limited visibility which is a surefire way to increase your likelihood of having an accident. Wiper blades are low cost and easy to install, so there is no reason not to ensure that your wiper blades are able to perform their job on the road.
This is exactly why car maintenance is so important for all drivers.
